Capt. Michael R. Ange, Ph.D.

An Uncommon Platform
Most speakers bring a single area of expertise to the platform. Capt. Ange brings three decades of operational experience across military service, law enforcement, diving and maritime operations, international business, academia, and forensic consulting — and the rare ability to make technically complex subjects compelling to any audience.
He has presented before international fire and rescue conferences, physician qualifying seminars, academic institutions, industry trade events, and professional organizations across four continents. His Lessons for Life accident analysis column was the most widely read column in Scuba Diving Magazine for nearly a decade — proof that technical subject matter, presented with clarity and narrative drive, finds and holds a large audience.

Education & Training
- The two models of dive instruction — competency versus throughput and why it matters for lifetime participation and the health of our industry
- Screen based learning and cognitive performance — what current neuroscience tells us about skill development in high risk disciplines
- Adult learning theory applied to dangerous environments — building genuine competency rather than minimum certification
- The evolution of recreational and technical diver training in North America — from the founding agencies of the 1980s to the global certification industry today
Leadership & Entrepreneurship
- Building international businesses in specialized industries
- Brand repositioning in technical markets — lessons from the diving equipment industry
Veterans, Resilience & Recovery
- Military to maritime — transitioning military service into becoming a diving professional, USCG licensing, and charter operations
- Resilience, recovery and the people who carry you — two separate battles with catastrophic injury and illness, decades apart, each survivable only through preparation, partnership, and an absolute refusal to quit.
The first — Gulf War Illness, acquired during the Gulf War, a condition the government denied existed for decades and in some quarters still does. The second — being thrown and trampled by a 1,200 pound thoroughbred, sustaining 18 broken bones including vertebrae and his sternum. He walked to the fence, popped his shoulder back in, went inside, had a beer, took a shower, and calmly told his wife they should probably go to the emergency room. The morning after emergency spinal surgery he lapped the ward.
This talk is about preparation, partnership, and the person standing beside you when quitting would have been the easier choice.
